Meet The Flynns

The Flynn Family

Meet the Flynn Family:

Walnut Spring Farm has been an integral part of our family dating back four generations to 1854 and the Hoge family. Jud Flynn grew up here with numerous siblings, his mom Carol and stepdad James Otey Hoge.  He had a horse named Gringa which he rode all over the farm.  Discovering every nook, cranny, hollow, hilltop and pond, Jud reveled in his childhood and has passed that knowledge and a love for the land to his own family.

Heather Flynn grew up in Chesapeake, Va., doing farm chores and learning horsemanship skills. She would ride any horse or pony that needed some exercise just to spend time around horses. She has passed that love on as well.

When Jud and Heather met in 2000 at Virginia Tech , both were working as chefs. They married four years later and began raising their family, Lane and Sophia.

When the Flynn family took over ownership and management of Walnut Spring Stables in 2008, they started a new chapter of their lives. Every family member has a job around the farm. You might see Lane cutting grass and mowing, as well as checking and fixing fences.  Sophia, or “Phia” as she prefers,  is the horse girl in the family. When she isn’t riding one of her ponies, Flash or Pepper,  she’ll be working shifts, helping with lessons or just hanging around the farm property.

Heather runs the day to day horse and stable operations and is the face of the business, while Jud oversees the farm property management and hay production and sales.

When you come to our little slice of heaven on the outskirts of Blacksburg, we are confident you will appreciate the beauty of Walnut Spring Farm’s rolling hills and verdant fields as much as we do.

On the chef side of life, Jud owns and operates onsiteculinary.com, an exquisite catering business plus cooking classes and curbside chef services. When he needs help in the kitchen or with set-up or tear down, well, the Flynn family is right by his side. www.onsiteculinary.com
